The story of radio began in 1865 when the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell predicted the invention of radio waves. Guided by the research of Michael Faraday, Maxwell set out to formulate a theory that would account for all of the known facts about electricity and magnetism and the ways in which they interest. The result was electromagnetic theory, which eventually achieved universal acceptance. In order for his theory to be correct, however it was necessary for electromagnetic disturbances, such as current and magnetic effect, to travel at some constant speed. With the help of profound stroke of intuition, Maxwell proposed that this speed is equal to the felicity of light. If so, light itself must be an electromagnetic equation. Maxwell went on the propose that light waves constitute merely a very small portion of a much greater range of electromagnetic wavelengths. He predicated that other wavelengths should exist which were for too long to be seen by the eye.

In 1887 Maxwell’s predication came true when Heinrich Hertz produced “invisible light” or radio waves by purely electrical means. He used sparks to produce his waves, and he picked them up some 50 feet in away with the help of a simple receiver. He also showed that this mysterious new waves could be reflected by sheet of metal just as light waves are reflected by a mirror. Radio waves in fact seemed to exhibit all his characteristics of light.

For decades the lakes and rivers of industrial nations have been used indiscriminately for disposing of human and industrial waste. Although river are excellent purifying system, the waste of a rapidly increasing population may overtake this aquatic system until they lose their recycling ability. As the oxygen levels dwindle, the body of water may be transformed from an aerobic to an unaerobic condition. Furthermore, as energy demands increase the use of large quantities of water for cooling purposes places a further stress on the aquatic environment. Although nuclear power plant contribute to a reduction in the amount of air pollution produced by fossil fuels, they pose an presented problem of thermal pollution.
