Pope consoles flood victims

ITALY: Pope John Paul offered prayers and words of comfort on Wednesday to people in Europe and Asia, where floods have killed hundreds of people and ravaged homes and harvests.

“All of them are close in my thoughts and prayers. I encourage and offer solidarity to the countries and people who have been victims of such horrible events,” the 82-year-old Pope said at his regular mid-week audience.”

He singled out China, where local media quoted the water resources minister on Wednesday as saying flooding had killed more than 1.300 people nationwide.

One million flood workers in central and eastern China are currently trying to prevent a repeat of the 1998 deluge, which killed some 4.000 people after he Yangtze burst its banks following weeks of rain.
